A new report from the National Center for Health Workforce Analysis looks at projected changes in the nation’s supply of specialty and sub-specialty physicians, advanced practice nurses, and physician assistants.
Key findings include:
- The supply of full-time equivalent [FTE] non-primary care physicians is forecast to grow 21% by 2025.
- Physical medicine/rehabilitation and emergency medicine will see the largest growth, while declines are expected for critical care medicine, occupational medicine, and thoracic surgery.
- The future supply of physicians on a per capita basis will vary, with growth in pediatric sub-specialties and obstetrics-gynecology and drops in cardiology, psychiatry and general surgery.
- Growth of advanced nurse practitioners — 141% for FTEs — and to a lesser extent, physician assistants is also projected.
